Safety officials finally have a good idea of what a big rocket explosion can do

The recent explosion of a New Glenn rocket at Cape Canaveral, Florida, has posed challenges for Blue Origin and NASA, yet it has provided invaluable insights for safety officials eager to expand the spaceport's operations. As preparations ramp up for an influx of new launches, the Space Coast is becoming a hub of activity. SpaceX is in the process of constructing multiple launch pads for its heavy-duty Starship rocket, located just a few miles from facilities operated by competitors such as Blue Origin and United Launch Alliance. In addition, companies like Stoke Space and Relativity Space are establishing their own launch sites along the narrow coastline of Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. All these organizations are transitioning to rockets that utilize methane or liquified natural gas, moving away from the traditional fuels of kerosene, liquid hydrogen, or solid propellants. This fuel shift comes with compelling technical advantages; however, prior to last week's incident, engineers had limited real-world data regarding the potential destruction caused by millions of pounds of methane and liquid oxygen in the event of an explosion on the launch pad or shortly after liftoff. The Space Force anticipates that by 2036, the spaceport could handle as many as 500 launches annually, a significant increase from last year's numbers. The ambitious launch projections, combined with the Space Force's stringent safety protocols, have led to some friction within the Cape Canaveral spaceport. Rivals of SpaceX have expressed concerns that the frequent launches and landings of the reusable Starship rocket may necessitate evacuations of their own operations for safety reasons. The US Space Force, which oversees the spaceport, enforces strict regulations governing the use of methalox rockets, while kerosene and hydrogen are considered more stable options.
