We are entering a golden age of robotics startups — and not just because of AI

The robotics landscape is undergoing a transformative shift, according to industry expert Seth Winterroth, who co-founded Eclipse Ventures after leaving GE Ventures in 2015. Initially, many robotics startups struggled to attract venture capital, with founders fresh from prestigious institutions like CMU and MIT expressing frustration over the lack of investor interest. At that time, most funding was directed toward established applications rather than nascent robotics ventures. Fast forward to today, and the scenario has dramatically changed. Winterroth, now a partner at Eclipse, emphasizes that the robotics startup ecosystem has matured significantly, with advancements in both hardware and software making these technologies more accessible and cost-effective. In fact, Crunchbase reported that investments in robotics startups reached $6 billion in just the first half of 2025, setting the stage for a record year. While the recent surge in investor interest in robotics can be connected to the rise of AI, seasoned investors argue that this momentum has deeper roots. Winterroth points to the pivotal acquisition of Kiva Systems by Amazon in 2013 as a key turning point, catalyzing the formation of numerous new robotics companies. This acquisition inspired a wave of startups, some of which thrived while others faltered, but the cumulative learning has enriched the industry. Kira Noodleman from Bee Partners notes that the past decade has been instrumental in refining what the market truly needs from robotics and automation. Many startups, including Rapid Robotics, faced challenges that ultimately shaped the expectations of future founders. She emphasizes that the concept of completely automated manufacturing is unrealistic, as real-world applications require human oversight in many tasks. Fady Saad, a general partner at Cybernetix Ventures, highlights that decreasing hardware costs have also sparked investor interest, making it feasible for companies to scale operations effectively. The convergence of advancements in sensor technology and computing power has created a fertile environment for full-stack robotics solutions. Although AI continues to play a significant role in shaping the future of robotics, Saad believes it is not the sole driver of growth. He points out that while AI is useful for training robots, its reliance on online information contrasts with the real-world interaction that robots require. Companies like Nvidia are working on developing models based on real-life data, which will aid in this training process. The robotics sector still has room for exploration. Industries like manufacturing, warehousing, and construction are prime candidates for robotics adoption, with healthcare and eldercare also emerging as promising areas for investment. Despite the excitement around humanoid robots, many investors remain skeptical about consumer demand for such technologies in residential settings. As the robotics industry evolves, the influx of venture capital is seen as a positive sign. Winterroth and Saad agree that the growing awareness among potential customers is helping to solidify the market for robotic solutions, transforming what was once a speculative venture into a thriving business ecosystem. With a wealth of successful examples now available, the future of robotics appears bright, promising a robust marketplace for innovative solutions that address real-world challenges.
