A robotics startup based in San Francisco is under legal scrutiny following allegations from an Airbnb host who asserts that the company’s testing of robotic prototypes resulted in significant damage to his property. Sean Donovan, the host, filed a lawsuit on May 26, 2026, seeking over $12,000 in damages from The Bot Company, a Bay Area firm. The situation was first reported by SFGate, which also featured Donovan’s account of the chaos he discovered after the startup's team allegedly rented his childhood home through Airbnb. Donovan noticed that the guests were unusual for typical tech employees when he began noticing strange items during their stay, including “bundles of wires.” He recounted encountering a robot resembling a towering 6-foot-tall “Roomba with treads,” reminiscent of the Borg from Star Trek. Over the course of their two-week rental in April, more than 30 individuals reportedly came and went from the property, with Donovan’s Ring camera capturing snippets of conversations suggesting they were taking shifts. The aftermath of their stay left the property in disarray, with damages reported including paint and floor damage, a ruined kitchen doorframe, bent dishwasher racks, and scratches on wooden furniture. Notably, an antique family dining table suffered scratches and water marks, while cabinets and drawers were emptied and their contents relocated. Additionally, a shoe rack and a pair of shoes disappeared from a locked bedroom closet, prompting Donovan’s lawsuit to raise concerns of a potentially criminal situation.
