Robot dogs are protecting data centers. Operators are seeing payoffs.

In an innovative twist on security measures, data center operators are increasingly turning to robotic canines to safeguard their facilities. As investments in cloud and AI computing surge, these four-legged robots are stepping in to patrol fences, inspect machinery, and identify potential issues before they escalate into costly outages. Merry Frayne, senior director of product management at Boston Dynamics, the company behind the renowned Spot robot, recently noted a significant rise in interest from data centers over the past year. With North America projected to add 35 gigawatts of data center capacity, the demand for efficient surveillance solutions is at an all-time high. Robotic dogs have already proven their worth in various sectors, including emergency response and military operations. Now, their deployment is expanding into the data center realm, where the need for around-the-clock monitoring is imperative. Robotics firms like Boston Dynamics and Ghost Robotics are keen to capitalize on this trend, offering solutions that promise quick returns on investment by minimizing human labor costs. Spot, Boston Dynamics’ flagship robot, is not just a security measure; it’s capable of performing industrial inspections, mapping sites, and monitoring construction activities. According to Frayne, the robot's price ranges from $175,000 to $300,000 depending on its configuration. Customers often see a return on their investment within 18 months, not including the value of the data collected. Ghost Robotics is also making strides in this field with its Vision 60 model. This robot, which starts at $165,000, is designed primarily for external security patrols, monitoring fence lines for breaches or suspicious activity. Michael Subhan, chief growth officer at Ghost Robotics, emphasizes that their robots do not replace human guards but serve as an additional layer of surveillance, ensuring that facilities remain secure without the limitations of human presence. The ability of these robots to traverse large areas on a single charge is a significant advantage for data centers, many of which operate in extreme climates. While traditional security measures still have their place, the flexibility and efficiency of robotic solutions are becoming increasingly appealing. Although widespread adoption of robot dogs in data centers is still in its early stages, companies like Novva Data Centers are already implementing these technologies. Their flagship facility in Utah utilizes Boston Dynamics’ Spot robots to conduct routine missions, collecting data and monitoring equipment. As the demand for data centers continues to skyrocket, driven primarily by advancements in AI, the opportunity for robotics companies to integrate their solutions into this expanding market is promising. With thousands of data centers across the United States and many more under construction, the future of robotic security appears bright.
