Roblox banned in Russia, local media says

The popular online gaming platform Roblox has reportedly been banned in Russia, as detailed by state media sources. Known for its user-generated content, Roblox allows players to create and share their own games, drawing comparisons to Minecraft. The platform hosts a variety of communities, including military roleplay and LGBTQ support groups, which have sparked legal concerns in Russia due to laws classifying public LGBTQ advocacy as 'extremist activity.' According to a TASS report, the country's communications agency has cited the presence of LGBTQ-themed content on Roblox as a key reason for the ban. Despite attempts to reach out, Roblox has not commented on the situation. This ban occurs amidst growing scrutiny of the platform's safety and moderation practices, particularly regarding the protection of its younger users. Recent investigations have revealed that Roblox has inadvertently exposed some minors to potential predators. In response, the platform has faced legal inquiries from the attorneys general in Texas and Louisiana. To enhance user safety, Roblox has begun implementing age checks and content moderation tools, with plans to introduce mandatory facial verification for accessing chat features starting in January. However, this technology raises its own set of safety concerns. Roblox is also urging developers to identify games that focus on sensitive social, political, or religious issues, allowing parents of users under 13 to make informed decisions about their children's access to such content. This initiative has drawn criticism from advocacy organizations like Out Making Games and Women in Games, which argue that labeling topics such as 'pay equity in sports' as sensitive could lead to discrimination and the silencing of crucial discussions. An app intelligence firm, Appfigures, estimates that Roblox has been installed around 70 million times in Russia, with 8 million downloads occurring just this year.
