Here’s how Roblox’s age checks work

In a significant update aimed at improving user safety, Roblox has reported that 45% of its daily active users have completed the new age verification process, which was implemented just a month ago to regulate access to chats on the platform. This move comes in the wake of numerous lawsuits regarding child safety from the attorneys general of Texas, Kentucky, and Louisiana, highlighting concerns about the potential risks faced by young users, including exposure to grooming and inappropriate content. To complete the age verification, users must launch the Roblox app, grant access to their camera, and follow several on-screen prompts for facial recognition. According to Roblox, any images or videos captured during this process are promptly deleted. The verification is handled by a third-party service, Persona, which also ensures that all data is removed after the verification is complete. Once users are verified, they gain access to age-specific chat features. This system divides users into six age categories: under 9, 9-12, 13-15, 16-17, 18-20, and 21 plus. Participants can communicate with others in their group as well as adjacent age groups. For instance, those aged 9-12 can chat with peers in their category, as well as with users under 9 and those aged 13-15. If a user's age is inaccurately assessed, they have the option to appeal and verify their age through alternative means, such as providing identification or parental controls that can adjust their registered age. During its fourth-quarter earnings release, Roblox disclosed that the data from these age checks indicates a younger user demographic than previously reported. Notably, of the verified users, 35% are under 13, 38% are between 13 and 17, and 27% are over 18. As the new age verification system rolled out, concerns emerged regarding potential loopholes. Reports indicated that eBay had listings for age-verified Roblox accounts belonging to minors as young as nine, although these listings have since been removed. Nonetheless, worries persist that individuals with malicious intent might exploit the system by masquerading as younger users. To combat these risks, Eliza Jacobs, Roblox’s senior director of product policy, emphasized that the platform employs ongoing background checks to ensure the age accuracy of accounts. This includes monitoring user activity, such as the types of games played and communication patterns, as well as analyzing typing behaviors and emoji usage, which tend to differ between adults and children. Beyond enhancing safety, Roblox CEO David Baszucki noted that the insights gained from age verification could also bolster the platform's revenue. He highlighted a surprising growth opportunity in the 18-plus demographic, which is reportedly expanding at a rate exceeding 50% and shows a 40% higher monetization rate compared to younger users. Moving forward, Roblox plans to tailor its platform to better cater to the preferences of older users, particularly in genres like shooters, RPGs, sports, and racing. The company is committed to continually updating its safety protocols to address emerging risks and meet user needs.
