Roblox expands use of age estimation tech and introduces standardized ratings

In response to ongoing concerns about child safety, Roblox has announced a significant expansion of its age estimation technology, which will now be available to all users. The gaming platform has partnered with the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) to implement standardized age and content ratings for the games and applications available on its site. By the end of the year, this age estimation feature will be accessible to users utilizing Roblox's communication tools, such as voice and text chat. The new technology works by scanning users' selfies and analyzing their facial features to provide an age estimate. This method is part of a broader set of tools that include ID age verification and verified parental consent to ensure a more accurate understanding of a user's age. Roblox has emphasized that this approach is much more reliable than simply having children enter their birth year when setting up an account. Additionally, Roblox is set to roll out mechanisms that will further restrict interactions between adults and minors on the platform. The partnership with IARC will replace Roblox’s current content and maturity labels with those recognized internationally. As a result, players in the U.S. will see ratings from the ESRB, while players in other countries will encounter their respective national rating systems, such as GRAC in South Korea, USK in Germany, and PEGI in parts of Europe and the UK. These updates aim to assist parents in understanding the nature of the games their children engage with, particularly concerning potentially concerning content that includes violence, substance use, and adult language. This announcement follows a series of safety enhancements Roblox implemented in July, which included an age-verification system that uses video selfies to restrict access to certain features for users under 13. Roblox continues to face scrutiny over child safety, with reports highlighting ongoing issues such as child predators accessing the platform and inappropriate content surfacing. Recent lawsuits filed in various states, including Louisiana and California, underscore these challenges. Despite implementing tools like Roblox Sentinel, an AI system designed to identify early signs of danger, incidents of misconduct persist, prompting further calls for enhanced safety measures. In light of the new rating system, Roblox hopes to provide parents with greater transparency regarding the games their children are playing. "Roblox is dedicated to fostering a safe environment for our users and empowering parents with the information they need to make informed choices for their children," stated Matt Kaufman, Roblox’s chief safety officer. The company is optimistic that this collaboration with IARC will enhance clarity and confidence regarding age-appropriate content for parents worldwide.
