In a significant move to enhance child safety, Roblox is now enforcing mandatory facial verification for all users who wish to utilize its chat features. This global rollout follows a series of lawsuits and investigations focused on protecting younger users, and after initial testing in select markets last month. To verify their age, users must access the Roblox app, grant camera permissions, and follow a straightforward series of on-screen prompts. According to the company, all images and videos captured during this process will be deleted once the age verification is complete. This verification is handled by a third-party vendor, Persona, which also ensures that all data is erased post-processing. While age verification is not a prerequisite for using Roblox, it is essential for those who want to engage in chat functionalities. Users aged 13 and older have the option to verify their age using either facial recognition or traditional ID verification. If a user feels that the system has inaccurately assessed their age, they can appeal the decision through various methods, including parental controls that allow parents to correct their child’s age. Roblox has stated that it continually monitors user behavior, employing multiple signals to ascertain if a user may be significantly older or younger than their stated age. In such cases, the platform may prompt users to undergo the age-check process again. Once users complete the verification, they gain access to age-restricted chat features that limit communication to individuals within similar age brackets. The classifications include six distinct groups: under 9, 9 to 12, 13 to 15, 16 to 17, 18 to 20, and 21 plus. For example, a user in the 9-12 range can converse with others in their own category, as well as those in the under 9 and 13-15 groups. For children under 9, chat functionality is disabled by default unless parents provide consent after an age check. This initiative has been introduced in light of ongoing legal challenges, including lawsuits from the attorneys general of Texas and Louisiana, which raise serious concerns about the exposure of minors to potential dangers on the platform, such as grooming and inappropriate content. Roblox insists that this new verification system will offer a more reliable method of confirming users' ages compared to the previous practice of simply entering a birth date when setting up an account.
