Riding an AI rally, Robinhood preps second retail venture IPO

In a bold move to expand its investment portfolio, Robinhood is gearing up to unveil its second venture fund just two months after the successful launch of its first. The company has initiated a confidential registration for RVII, a crucial regulatory step that allows it to navigate the approval process before revealing specifics to the public. Unlike its inaugural fund, which is currently invested in ten late-stage companies including notable names like OpenAI, Databricks, and Stripe, RVII plans to target both growth-stage and early-stage startups. This strategic distinction is significant, as early-stage investments typically carry higher risks but also the potential for greater returns. While Robinhood has yet to announce a fundraising target for RVII, their first fund aimed to raise $1 billion, ultimately falling short by several hundred million. However, the initial fund has demonstrated impressive performance since its debut. The first fund, trading under the ticker RVI on the NYSE, launched at $21 per share in early March and has seen its value more than double, closing at $43.69 on Monday. The surge in stock price is likely fueled by market enthusiasm surrounding the AI prospects of the startups included in the fund. Both funds aim to bridge a longstanding gap in startup investment opportunities, which have traditionally been restricted to accredited investors—those with a net worth exceeding $1 million or an annual income above $200,000. Robinhood’s approach seeks to democratize investment in private companies, allowing everyday investors to gain access to a diverse portfolio of startups through standard brokerage accounts. CEO Vlad Tenev describes Robinhood Ventures as a publicly traded venture capital firm offering daily liquidity, meaning shares can be bought or sold on any market day, in contrast to traditional VC funds where capital is typically tied up for extended periods. Moreover, Robinhood will not take a percentage of profits, a departure from common practices in the venture capital sector. Tenev envisions a future where retail investors play a substantial role in early funding rounds, similar to their participation in public markets. If this vision materializes, it could revolutionize the landscape of startup financing, enabling retail investors to engage alongside venture firms in the earliest and often most lucrative investment stages.
