Conservative figure and activist Robby Starbuck has taken on a new position as an advisor for Meta, focusing on minimizing bias in the company's artificial intelligence systems. This collaboration comes as part of a settlement reached after Starbuck filed a defamation lawsuit against Meta in April, claiming that its AI chatbot falsely implicated him in the January 6 Capitol riots. In a shared statement, Starbuck and Meta's Chief Global Affairs Officer, Joel Kaplan, announced their mutual satisfaction in resolving the issue. They highlighted that since their discussions began, Meta has made significant improvements in the accuracy of its AI tools, aiming to reduce political and ideological biases. The partnership will allow Starbuck to play a role in further enhancing these efforts to ensure the AI does not generate misleading responses to user inquiries. Starbuck, who previously worked as a music video director, gained prominence for his campaigns against major brands' diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. He has targeted companies popular among conservative consumers, claiming some have scaled back their DEI programs due to his influence. With Meta's commitment to advancing AI technology, the involvement of Starbuck is noteworthy, especially as the company aims for what it describes as "AI superintelligence." Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg reported that the AI tools are currently utilized by over one billion people monthly across the company's platforms, although the specifics of how this usage is tracked remain unclear. The partnership with Starbuck also aligns with recent governmental directives aimed at eliminating perceived ideological bias from AI systems, as outlined in an executive order signed by former President Trump. Starbuck originally sought $5 million in damages through his lawsuit, but Meta has not disclosed any financial details of the settlement nor commented on whether Starbuck receives compensation for his advisory role. In a recent interview, Starbuck emphasized that his primary goal is to address these bias issues rather than focus on financial gain. As Meta continues to shift its ideological stance, including the appointment of right-leaning figures and the removal of certain fact-checking partnerships, Starbuck asserts that his presence will advocate for fairness in AI. He expressed confidence that he will represent conservative interests as AI becomes increasingly influential in various sectors. Starbuck's activism centers on urging corporations to adopt a neutral position on social issues, framing it as a matter of accountability for businesses that rely on conservative clientele.
