Rivian R2 EPA certification leaked, gets 335 miles of range

Rivian is gearing up to deliver its highly anticipated R2 SUVs to eager customers shortly. Following the success of its R1S and R1T models, the electric vehicle manufacturer is set to penetrate the midsize SUV market with the launch of the R2 later this year. Last month, Rivian unveiled pricing and trim options, starting at $57,990 for the R2 Performance, which will be the sole variant available initially. The R2 Premium, priced at $53,990, is expected to hit the market by late 2026. Both models are equipped with a battery boasting a capacity of 87.9 kWh. Initially, Rivian projected a range of at least 330 miles (531 km) on 21-inch tires for these vehicles. Recent leaks from the Rivian Forums have revealed the official EPA range certification details. When outfitted with 21-inch wheels, the R2 officially achieves a range of 335 miles (539 km). Additionally, the EPA testing provided insights into the vehicle's performance with 20-inch wheels. While smaller wheels typically enhance range due to reduced drag, the R2’s all-terrain tires result in a dip in the EPA estimate to 314 miles (505 km). As more trim options are introduced, further EPA range data will likely emerge, especially for the smaller wheel configurations equipped with standard all-purpose tires. Notably, a more affordable variant priced at $45,000 with a reduced battery capacity is anticipated to launch in late 2027. Additional specifications from the leaked document indicate that the battery pack capacity is slightly lower at 86.8 kWh. The R2 also supports a maximum DC fast charging rate of 210 kW, alongside an 11.5 kW AC charging capability. Moreover, a heat pump comes standard, featuring enhancements over the previous version found in the R1 series.
