Rivian’s factory hit by tornado ahead of R2 launch

Over the weekend, Rivian's manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois, experienced a direct hit from a tornado, causing significant damage. Fortunately, the company reported that no injuries occurred during the incident. Employees are currently evaluating the full extent of the destruction. The tornado, classified as EF-1, impacted a section of the plant known as "Building 2," where Rivian produces its highly anticipated R2 SUV. Operations in this part of the factory have been temporarily halted, with plans to resume activities later this week, as stated in an email from CEO RJ Scaringe to the staff on Sunday night. In his message, Scaringe expressed gratitude towards the employees who effectively followed emergency protocols, ensuring their safety during the tornado. He praised their collective efforts in supporting each other and initiating cleanup and repair operations swiftly. Photos circulating online reveal that a large portion of the roof collapsed within the facility. Rivian has not confirmed whether this temporary closure will delay the R2’s launch, scheduled to take place in the upcoming weeks. The tornado struck a relatively new section of the factory utilized for logistics related to the R2, including the delivery of parts. Company spokesperson Marina Hoffmann indicated that operations would resume in Building 2 once the affected area is secured, assuring that activities at other facilities remain unaffected. The stakes are high for Rivian as the R2 launch approaches. The company has committed substantial resources over the past five years to streamline vehicle manufacturing processes in its existing R1 lineup. Despite these efforts, Rivian continues to report quarterly losses, largely due to ongoing investments in infrastructure expected to yield returns as the R2 SUV scales production. Rivian aims to sell between 20,000 and 25,000 R2 SUVs by the end of this year, positioning it as one of the fastest launches of a new electric vehicle in the United States, just trailing Tesla’s Model Y. Production of the R2 will commence at the Normal facility alongside the R1 vehicles and Rivian's electric delivery vans. Additionally, plans are underway for a new factory near Atlanta, Georgia, which will focus on R2 and the newly introduced R3 hatchback, with construction set to begin this year and production anticipated to start in 2028.
