Rivian R2 launch: Here’s what $57,990 gets you

After two years of anticipation, Rivian has finally revealed the complete details of its forthcoming R2 SUV, including pricing, color options, and performance specifications. Aiming to capture a broader market, Rivian's new electric vehicle will be available at a price range from $45,000 to $57,990, depending on the chosen performance and design features. The R2 SUV will initially launch with its highest-priced variant, the R2 Performance with the Launch Package trim, which boasts all-wheel drive and dual motors, offering an impressive EPA estimated range of up to 330 miles. This version is set to debut this spring at a starting price of $57,990. In late 2026, Rivian plans to introduce a premium version of the R2, which will also feature dual motors and maintain the same 330-mile range, but at a lower starting price of $53,990. As Rivian expands its R2 lineup, two standard variants will be offered. The 'long range' version is expected to launch in early 2027 with an estimated range of 345 miles, starting at $48,490. Meanwhile, a more affordable standard version with an estimated range of 275 miles may be available in late 2027, priced at around $45,000—although the final production of this variant remains uncertain and will likely depend on the initial success of the higher-priced models. Rivian emphasizes consistency across all R2 trims, as they are built on a new mid-sized platform developed in-house, featuring an 87.9 kilowatt-hour battery pack and a North American Charging Standard port. However, performance specifications vary significantly. The performance launch edition delivers a remarkable 656 horsepower and 609 lb-ft of torque, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. In contrast, the premium trim produces 450 horsepower and 537 lb-ft of torque, completing the same sprint in 4.6 seconds. The standard long-range version, designed for efficiency, generates 350 horsepower and 355 lb-ft of torque, with a slower acceleration time of 5.9 seconds to reach 60 mph. The R2 SUV represents a crucial step for Rivian as it seeks to appeal to a wider audience without alienating potential buyers due to high costs. The vehicle's pricing sits just above the average new car cost, which was reported at $49,191 in January by Kelly Blue Book. Rivian is also offering buyers various customization options that can increase the vehicle's price, including paint colors and interior upgrades. The initial color offering includes a new shade called Esker Silver, with additional options such as the exclusive 'launch green' for the launch edition. Rivian will introduce three new color options: a metallic blue dubbed Catalina Cove, and a metallic grey named Half Moon Grey. Luxury features are abundant in the more expensive trims, including a 9-speaker audio system, heated and ventilated front seats, and a stylish interior accentuated with birch wood. Notably, every R2 comes with advanced driver assistance features, which can be upgraded with Rivian Autonomy+, a hands-free driving package available for a one-time fee or a monthly subscription. This feature will be included for purchasers of the performance launch edition. As Rivian prepares to make its R2 SUV available to consumers, the stakes are high for its success in the competitive electric vehicle market.
