Rivian continues to assert its position in the automotive sector with a groundbreaking software enhancement featuring a new artificial intelligence assistant. This initiative has solidified Rivian's reputation as a frontrunner in vehicle software development, prompting a substantial $5 billion investment from Volkswagen Group. The latest update, identified as version 2026.15, is compatible with both older Gen1 Rivian models (2024 model year and prior) and the more recent Gen2 vehicles. This new Rivian Assistant is only accessible to users with a subscription or trial of Connect+, the company’s connectivity service. Activating the assistant is user-friendly, allowing drivers to engage it via a steering wheel button, an icon on the infotainment screen, or through voice commands like “Hey Rivian” or “OK, Rivian.” What sets this AI apart is its operation within Rivian's private cloud, enabling a level of integration with vehicle subsystems that rivals offerings from premium brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz. According to Rivian, the AI assistant is designed to manage a wide array of functions, including vehicle settings, climate control, navigation, media, messaging, and calls. Additionally, it can reference the owner’s manual, respond to inquiries, search for information, and provide explanations for in-car alerts, assisting users in troubleshooting issues effectively.
