Rivian goes big on autonomy, with custom silicon, lidar, and a hint at robotaxis

Rivian has revealed its ambitious strategy to enhance the autonomy of its electric vehicles, showcasing new hardware including lidar technology and custom silicon. This announcement was made by CEO RJ Scaringe during the company's inaugural "Autonomy & AI Day" in Palo Alto, California. The event provided a glimpse into Rivian's ongoing technology development, which largely remained under wraps as the company gears up for the launch of its more affordable R2 SUV in early 2026. This initiative serves as a clear message to shareholders, emphasizing Rivian's commitment to keep pace with industry leaders like Tesla, Ford, and General Motors, as well as international competitors from Europe and China. Rivian plans to broaden the reach of its hands-free driver-assistance software to cover over 3.5 million miles of roads across the United States and Canada, with future expansions extending beyond highways to urban streets marked with clear lane markings. Dubbed "Universal Hands-Free," this feature is set to roll out with the company's next-generation R1 trucks and SUVs in early 2026, with a fee of either $2,500 as a one-time payment or $49.99 monthly. Scaringe described an innovative point-to-point navigation feature that allows drivers to input their destination and let the vehicle handle the journey autonomously. He emphasized the convenience this offers, allowing drivers to engage in other activities like using their phones or reading while the car drives itself. Rivian's plans don't stop there; the company aims to evolve its driver assistance capabilities toward what it refers to as "personal L4" autonomy, which indicates a vehicle's ability to operate without human intervention in designated areas. Looking ahead, Scaringe hinted at Rivian's aspirations in the rideshare market, stating that while the primary focus will initially be on personally owned vehicles, the company is also exploring opportunities within the ridesharing sector. To achieve these objectives, Rivian is developing a large driving model, drawing inspiration from techniques used in large language models but tailored for real-world driving. At the event, Rivian also unveiled its custom 5nm processor, developed in collaboration with Arm and TSMC. This chip powers what Rivian identifies as its third-generation autonomy computer (ACM3), capable of processing an impressive 5 billion pixels per second. The ACM3 will be featured in the upcoming mass-market R2 SUV, scheduled for release in late 2026, alongside a lidar sensor positioned atop the windshield to enhance real-time detection capabilities. According to Vidya Rajagopalan, senior vice president of electrical hardware, Rivian anticipates that this combination of sensors and advanced computing will set a new standard in consumer vehicles across North America. Although the initial R2 models launching in 2026 will not include the ACM3 or lidar sensor, Rivian aims to continuously upgrade the autonomy features of its existing R1 and future R2 vehicles. Scaringe noted that while many current vehicles can achieve a significant level of autonomy without the newly introduced hardware, the enhancements will greatly elevate their capabilities. James Philbin, vice president of autonomy and AI, stated that incorporating lidar creates a comprehensive 3D model of the vehicle's surroundings, with the goal of achieving a level of sensing that goes beyond mere human capability.
