Rivian announces new AI tech, in-house chip and robotaxi ambitions

Rivian Automotive, the electric vehicle manufacturer, has announced significant advancements in its technology during its inaugural "Autonomy and AI Day" held in Palo Alto, California. The company has developed a bespoke chip and a sophisticated car computer designed to facilitate self-driving functionalities in its upcoming vehicle lineup. Starting in early 2026, Rivian plans to introduce its Autonomy+ subscription service, which promises a range of continuously evolving features. This service will be powered by the company's new Rivian Autonomy Processors and autonomy computers. Customers will have the option to purchase the service upfront for $2,500 or subscribe for $49.99 per month. In comparison, Tesla's premium Full Self-Driving (FSD) package is priced at $8,000 upfront or $99 per month. In a notable upcoming software update, Rivian will introduce a "Universal Hands-Free" driving capability, which will allow drivers to navigate over 3.5 million miles of North American roads without manual input. This feature aims to cover a significant majority of marked roads across the United States. Unlike Tesla, Rivian is incorporating lidar and radar sensors into its vehicles to achieve "level 4" automation, as defined by SAE standards. This level of autonomy allows passengers to relax, even sleep, while the vehicle navigates through typical traffic and weather conditions. Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe emphasized the company’s ambition to explore opportunities in the ridesharing sector, commonly referred to as robotaxis, thanks to these innovations. Rivian is not alone in the race toward fully autonomous driving; competitors like Tesla and General Motors are also developing their own advanced systems. Meanwhile, companies such as Honda, Lucid, and Nissan are collaborating with various autonomous vehicle tech startups to explore different technological approaches. As the electric vehicle market faces challenges, including a sales slump following the cessation of a significant federal tax credit for EV buyers, Rivian is under pressure to demonstrate its growth potential. While the company’s shares have risen about 25% this year, they still remain over 80% lower than their value at the time of its 2021 IPO, reflecting the broader industry pressures and competition from international electric vehicle manufacturers.
