Rivian restarting work on its Georgia factory, emails show

Rivian has announced plans to restart preparations for its much-anticipated factory in Georgia this August, aiming to commence construction early next year. This decision follows the recent approval of a $6.6 billion funding package by the Biden administration’s Department of Energy, which is set to support the construction efforts. As of June 20, 2025, Rivian has invested over $80 million into the factory project, a significant increase from the $41 million reported in July 2024. According to internal emails obtained by TechCrunch, the project has already generated 46 full-time positions. The company is set to begin installing essential utilities this August, with plans for vertical construction to kick off in the first quarter of 2026. In a strategic move, Rivian is reaching out to current suppliers to explore opportunities for them to establish operations near the Georgia site. The company is also working with the state's economic development department to identify local suppliers capable of contributing to the production of the R2 SUV and R3 hatchback when the factory opens its doors in 2028. Rivian's CEO, RJ Scaringe, recently met with Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, an encounter described by Rivian's corporate affairs director as a priority for the company. In a follow-up email, the director indicated that the meeting served as a platform to provide updates on the project and reinforce a collaborative relationship with the state. The Georgia factory was initially revealed shortly after Rivian's IPO in late 2021, with plans to begin construction in 2022 and to have production operational by 2024. The company pledged a $5 billion investment in the facility, alongside securing $1.5 billion in state incentives in May 2022. However, local opposition and supply chain challenges led to delays in the project's timeline, as Rivian chose to focus on expanding its existing factory in Normal, Illinois, which received $827 million in incentives from the state. In late 2024, Rivian secured the significant loan from the Department of Energy, intended to support advanced vehicle manufacturing. This funding initiative is reminiscent of the assistance provided to Tesla during the economic downturn over a decade ago. Following the loan approval, Rivian and Governor Kemp's office began coordinating efforts to facilitate further discussions about the project. As Rivian intensifies its supplier engagements, the company is also actively hiring for the factory's construction phase, having recently listed seven job openings on LinkedIn, including a construction manager position. This hiring initiative reflects Rivian's commitment to establishing a robust workforce for its Georgia facility, which is poised to contribute significantly to the local economy and the American automotive landscape.
