Rivian has officially announced the details for its much-anticipated midsize electric vehicle, the R2, set to hit the market in the spring of this year. In a bold move, the company plans to launch with the high-performance R2 Performance variant, which is priced at $57,990, not including a $1,495 delivery fee. This electric SUV promises impressive specifications, boasting a range of up to 330 miles (531 km) on a single charge thanks to its robust 87.9 kWh battery pack. The dual-motor powertrain delivers an exhilarating 656 horsepower (489 kW) and 609 lb-ft (825 Nm) of torque. Fast charging capabilities are also noteworthy, allowing the vehicle to charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 29 minutes. The R2 Performance is designed with several premium features, including semi-active suspension, a unique rear window that retracts into the tailgate, and a sophisticated interior accented with birch wood. Comfort is prioritized with heated front and rear seats, ventilated front seats, and a nine-speaker sound system. Additional conveniences include matrix LED headlights and an integrated flashlight located within the door, reminiscent of how some vehicles conceal umbrellas. Buyers can enhance their R2 Performance with optional features such as Autonomy+, Rivian's partially automated driving assistance, and a tow package capable of handling 4,400 lbs (1,995 kg). The launch package includes a lifetime subscription to Autonomy+, the tow package, and an alternative body color. In addition to the Performance model, Rivian plans to introduce the R2 Premium variant later in 2026, starting at $53,990. While it shares the same impressive 330-mile range and battery capacity as its Performance counterpart, the R2 Premium generates slightly less power at 450 hp (355 kW) and 537 lb-ft (728 Nm). It also omits features like semi-active suspension and offers fewer driving modes, making it a more accessible option for consumers.
