The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently probing Rivian after incidents involving rear suspension failures in its R1 electric vehicles. This investigation was prompted by reports from two vehicle owners who experienced a loss of control while driving. According to the NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI), both vehicles had undergone previous service, with one having been involved in a collision prior to its service. The ODI noted that Rivian became aware in March 2025 of a particular sensitivity in the rear toe link, a vital component that aids in maintaining wheel alignment. In response, the company updated its servicing protocols for this part. The investigation aims to understand the reasons behind the sensitivity of the rear toe link under various road and service conditions. It will also analyze the two reported failures, scrutinize Rivian's current repair procedures, and check the condition of other R1 vehicles made during the 2023-2024 model years. The ODI estimates that as many as 115,000 vehicles may be impacted. In January 2026, Rivian recalled nearly 20,000 vehicles to address issues related to the toe link service that occurred before improvements were implemented. The company reassured the public, stating, "Vehicle safety is a top priority at Rivian," and that their data suggests the toe link joints are functioning as intended. Notably, one of the vehicles involved in the complaints was serviced by an independent repair facility. Both owners reported alarming incidents where a bolt on the toe link fractured. In one case, a driver lost control at high speeds, resulting in a collision with a guardrail. Another owner described their vehicle swerving uncontrollably across lanes and onto sidewalks after a similar part failure, leading to personal injury and a scare that triggered emergency alerts from their smartwatch. This investigation unfolds as Rivian prepares to launch its highly anticipated R2 SUV, with expectations of significantly higher sales volumes compared to its current lineup. Additionally, the company has plans to expand its service network, aiming to establish over 50 new service centers by the end of 2027, totaling more than 150 locations. Rivian believes that the simpler design of the R2 will lead to fewer service requirements, enhancing both quality assurance during production and maintenance efficiency.
