Rivian is redesigning the R2 SUV’s door handles for better safety

Rivian is set to modify the door handle design of its highly anticipated R2 SUV in response to safety concerns raised by both employees and customers, as reported by Bloomberg News. The automaker, which has embraced electronically-latched door handles in recent years for their sleek appearance and aerodynamic benefits, is now addressing the challenges these innovations can pose. The issue lies in the accessibility of manual emergency door releases, which have often been placed in difficult-to-locate areas. With the new design for the R2, scheduled for release next year, Rivian plans to position the interior manual releases closer to the electronically-powered handles, making them much more visible and easier to access. This design adjustment comes at a time when electronic door handles are under increased scrutiny. A recent Bloomberg report highlighted incidents involving Tesla owners who found themselves trapped in their vehicles due to poorly located manual releases. In light of these concerns, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation, prompting Tesla to announce a redesign of its own door handle mechanisms. Similarly, earlier this year, Ford had to issue a recall and halt sales of its Mustang Mach-E due to issues with electronic latches that could lock if the vehicle's 12-volt battery failed.
