Rivian owners will soon be able to access vehicle controls using their Apple Watch

Rivian is set to elevate the driving experience for its tech-savvy, adventure-loving clientele by introducing an innovative feature that allows Apple Watch users to control their vehicles. Announced on Thursday, the company plans to unveil a companion app that seamlessly links with the Apple Watch as part of an extensive update to its mobile application scheduled for next week. With this new functionality, Rivian owners will enjoy the convenience of performing essential tasks directly from their wrist. This includes locking and unlocking doors, venting windows, and even triggering the vehicle's alarm. The app promises to offer more personalized options as well, enabling users to adjust the digital crown on their watch to set a desired state of charge or tweak the cabin temperature. Moreover, the app allows users to select four quick-access controls based on their preferences. However, it's essential to note that there are some limitations for owners of Rivian's first-generation R1T trucks and R1S SUVs. For these models, users will need to open the app and tap the lock icon on their Apple Watch to lock or unlock their vehicles. In contrast, second-generation R1 vehicles will feature an automatic unlocking capability as the driver approaches, assuming a digital key has been configured. This Apple Watch integration coincides with a significant software update rolled out on the same day, focusing on performance enhancements and improved accessibility. Notable features include a new 'kneel mode' that lowers the vehicle by an additional inch and the ability for drivers to switch between different drive modes without disabling the advanced driver assistance system. Additionally, a cold weather indicator will now add a blue tint to the battery graphic on the vehicle's digital display, providing drivers with clear insight into energy consumption for heating purposes. Rivian is recognized for its electric vehicles, but software development has become a critical component of its offerings. The company has also attracted attention from major players like Volkswagen, which recently entered into a $5.8 billion technology joint venture with Rivian. This collaboration will see Volkswagen investing in Rivian through 2027, contingent on meeting specific milestones, with the software created through this partnership set to feature in future Volkswagen Group vehicles.
