Rivian taps Google to bring custom maps into its EVs and app

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Rivian has partnered with Google to innovate its in-vehicle navigation system. After 18 months of joint efforts, the two companies have announced a significant software update that will replace Rivian's existing Mapbox-based navigation with a customized version of Google Maps. This move is part of Rivian's strategy to enhance its vehicles through advanced software solutions, a strategy that has already garnered the interest of major automotive players like Volkswagen. Unlike traditional integrations seen in the automotive industry, this partnership aims to create a unique user experience tailored specifically for Rivian's customers. According to Wassym Bensaid, Rivian’s chief of software, the company has been attentive to customer feedback, particularly regarding navigation features. Instead of making incremental upgrades to their existing system, Rivian opted for a complete overhaul by collaborating with Google to develop a new navigation product. The integration will feature a host of new capabilities, including estimated time of arrival, real-time traffic updates, and detailed place information, all seamlessly combined within Rivian's navigation system. Tappable points of interest will also enhance user interaction, making trips more efficient and enjoyable. A standout feature of the new maps is the incorporation of Rivian's trip planner, which provides estimated EV range and helps users select charging stops. This functionality is powered by A Better Routeplanner, ensuring that drivers can make informed decisions on their journeys. Additionally, features such as 'range on arrival,' charging preferences, and a rating system for charging stations will now be integrated into the Google Maps experience. The updated Google Maps will begin rolling out today through a software update for Rivian vehicles, accompanied by enhancements in the Rivian mobile app. Users can expect new trip planning tools, including place photos, descriptions, and a satellite view (available with a Connect+ subscription). The app will also maintain its functionality for sharing destinations and trips between users and their vehicles, making the entire process smoother and more intuitive.
