Rivian is set to execute one of the swiftest launches of a new all-electric vehicle in the U.S. with its upcoming R2 SUV, as highlighted by insights from company officials and a TechCrunch examination of historical sales trends. The success of the R2 is critical for Rivian, with founder and CEO RJ Scaringe emphasizing it as potentially the most significant release to date. The company's future and its path to profitability are tightly linked to the R2's performance. With a target of selling between 20,000 and 25,000 units of the R2 this year, Rivian plans to begin delivering the first SUVs to customers by June, assuming production goes as planned. If Rivian achieves even the lower end of its sales projection, it will surpass the sales rates of nearly all comparable electric vehicles priced at or below $60,000, aside from the Tesla Model Y. The Model Y, which launched in March 2020, reached 20,000 sales in just about four months, a milestone Rivian hopes to achieve in approximately six months, akin to the Honda Prologue's sales pace. Notably, Rivian is entering a challenging market landscape. Many previous EV models benefitted from the $7,500 federal tax credit, which was eliminated last September. Major car manufacturers are reconsidering or halting electric vehicle projects in light of relaxed emissions regulations, while tariffs imposed during the Trump administration have increased vehicle prices, including Rivian's existing offerings. Despite these hurdles, Scaringe has framed the situation as an opportunity, suggesting that the EV market currently lacks options, particularly in the affordable segment. The R2 SUV is expected to start at $45,000, a price point Scaringe believes is essential for capturing mass-market interest. However, it remains unclear when the base model will be available, as the company plans to launch a higher-trim dual-motor version first, which will likely come at a premium. In early February, Rivian removed the price tag from its website but reaffirmed its commitment to the $45,000 starting price during communications with TechCrunch. With strong demand anticipated for electric SUVs in the R2's price range, competitors such as Volvo’s EX60, BMW’s iX3, and the Mercedes-Benz GLC are expected to enter the market later this year, potentially giving Rivian an edge. Analysts have expressed a mix of optimism and skepticism regarding Rivian's plans. While some see the R2's market segment as underrepresented in the EV landscape, others, like DA Davidson's Michael Shlisky, have cautioned about the ambitious nature of Rivian's launch targets. Similarly, Barclays analyst Dan Levy predicts Rivian's average transaction price for the R2 could exceed $60,000 for the foreseeable future as the company ramps up production at its Illinois facility, until its new factory in Georgia is operational.
