Rivian downsizes DOE loan to $4.5B of Georgia factory

Rivian has revised its financial strategy regarding its loan from the Department of Energy, now planning to secure $4.5 billion for the construction of its new factory in Georgia, a reduction from the original $6.6 billion figure set during the Biden administration. In a recent announcement, the electric vehicle manufacturer revealed that it will tap into this loan sooner than previously anticipated, aiming for early 2027. The company is also ramping up its production ambitions by increasing the factory’s initial capacity from 200,000 to 300,000 vehicles. This significant 50% boost reflects Rivian's confidence in the upcoming launch of its R2 SUV model. The expanded capacity is expected to reduce per-unit costs and allow room for further growth in the facility’s output during later development phases. Notably, a portion of this capacity will be dedicated to producing R2 robotaxis for Uber. Earlier this year, Uber made a substantial initial investment of $300 million in Rivian, which includes an order for 10,000 fully autonomous R2 robotaxis scheduled to hit the streets of San Francisco and Miami by 2028. The first $300 million investment is projected to finalize in the second quarter, with an additional $250 million investment anticipated later in the year. Furthermore, Uber holds an option to acquire up to 40,000 more autonomous R2 vehicles starting in 2030. The ride-hailing giant has committed to investing as much as $1.25 billion in Rivian through 2031, contingent upon the automaker achieving specific performance milestones. Construction on the Georgia factory commenced late last year, and Rivian is currently advancing to vertical construction at the site located just outside Atlanta. The company aims to commence vehicle production by the end of 2028, while continuing to manufacture R2 SUVs at its existing facility in Normal, Illinois. Despite facing damage from a tornado, Rivian has recently initiated production of the R2 and begun making initial deliveries to employees, with customer deliveries expected to start in the upcoming weeks. Alongside the loan adjustments, Rivian disclosed its financial results for the first quarter of 2026, reporting $1.38 billion in revenue. This total includes $908 million from vehicle sales and $473 million from software and services. However, the company experienced a slight decline in automotive revenue, attributed to a decrease in regulatory credits. Rivian posted a net loss of $416 million for the quarter, a reduction from a $541 million loss during the same period last year, thanks in part to a $506 million gain from other income related to a Series A capital raise and the formation of CEO RJ Scaringe’s startup, Mind Robotics. Despite these gains, Rivian’s operating expenses and research and development (R&D) costs have risen year-over-year. The company’s R&D budget has increased by 20% to $458 million, reflecting heightened investment in pre-production costs for the R2, along with advancements in software and cloud services for autonomous vehicle technology. This surge in expenses, coupled with a slight increase in capital expenditures, has negatively impacted Rivian’s free cash flow, which now stands at a negative $1 billion, nearly double the amount reported a year ago.
