Rivian’s best-case guess for 2025 sales is a 16% drop from last year

Rivian has revised its delivery expectations for 2025, forecasting a maximum of 43,500 electric vehicles, which marks a significant decrease of nearly 16% compared to last year's figures. This update was shared with investors on Thursday, coinciding with the release of their production and delivery statistics for the third quarter. In the latest quarter, Rivian achieved a notable increase in deliveries, with 13,201 vehicles delivered—up from 10,661 in the second quarter and 8,640 in Q1. The company also manufactured 10,720 electric vehicles during this period, showing a robust recovery following a sluggish start to the year. However, Rivian has acknowledged that the total number of vehicles delivered this year is expected to be lower than in both 2024 and 2023, when it surpassed the 50,000 mark. The situation is particularly critical for Rivian as it gears up to introduce its most anticipated vehicle, the R2 SUV, next year. The company plans to produce and market hundreds of thousands of these models and has invested heavily in upgrading its Normal, Illinois factory to accommodate this production. Additionally, construction is underway for a new facility in Georgia dedicated to manufacturing both the R2 and its hatchback variant, the R3. Initially, Rivian entered this year with optimism about matching its sales figures from 2024, projecting deliveries between 46,000 and 51,000 vehicles. However, due to fluctuating tariffs implemented by the Trump administration, the company revised its estimates downward in May, citing the impact of changing trade regulations on consumer demand. The latest guidance further narrows their expectations to between 41,500 and 43,500 vehicles. The electric vehicle market is currently facing challenges in the U.S., particularly with the current administration's stance on renewable energy and electric vehicles. Many major automakers have postponed or canceled their EV plans while supporting regulatory rollbacks. Despite these hurdles, Rivian's CEO, RJ Scaringe, has expressed a cautious optimism about the company's future beyond the federal EV tax credit, which has recently spurred increased sales across the industry. Scaringe believes that as the market evolves, companies like Rivian and Tesla, which focus solely on electric vehicles, will find themselves in a more advantageous position due to reduced competition.
