In 2026, the PC industry has faced significant challenges, primarily driven by escalating prices for memory and storage. Enthusiasts and smaller companies, unlike tech giants such as Apple, are feeling the brunt of these hikes. Notably, Framework, renowned for its repairable and upgradeable laptops like the Laptop 12, Laptop 13, and Laptop 16, has been significantly affected. Since halting the sale of standalone RAM sticks in November 2025, Framework has implemented monthly price increases on its products. This week, customers experienced particularly steep hikes on the Framework Desktop and DIY Editions of its laptops. The price surge impacts both standalone SODIMM memory modules and the soldered LPDDR5X memory utilized in Framework Desktop systems. According to Patel from Framework, the pricing of standalone RAM sticks is closely aligned with the average costs from their suppliers. For instance, an 8GB RAM stick for the Framework Laptop 13 that was $40 in September has skyrocketed to $130. Similarly, a 96GB DDR5 kit, previously priced at $480, now costs a staggering $1,340. Framework Desktop systems are also feeling the pressure, with price increases ranging from 6% to 16%. The base model with 32GB of LPDDR5X memory has risen to $1,209, marking a $110 increase since its launch. For those looking for the top-tier 128GB desktop, the starting price has surged to $2,599, a striking $600 more than its initial cost.
