A recent survey reveals a significant shift in American consumer attitudes towards Chinese car brands, with over half of potential buyers now considering them for their next vehicle. This marks a nearly 25 percent increase from the previous year, according to AutoPacific's annual research on car buyers. The survey, which involved 18,000 participants planning to buy or lease a new car within the next three years, highlights that while concerns regarding privacy and security persist, they have not deterred interest in these brands. AutoPacific is currently analyzing the data ahead of its comprehensive report release later this year. One of the notable findings from this year's study is the growing demand for partially automated driving systems. Technologies such as General Motors' Super Cruise and Ford's BlueCruise, which were previously less sought after, have surged in popularity. A remarkable 43 percent of consumers now express a desire for hands-free partial automation in their vehicles, matching the interest in rear automatic emergency braking. In a surprising turn, wireless device charging, which topped the list in 2024, failed to make the top 15 for 2025. The survey also indicated a rise in familiarity with Chinese brands; 65 percent of respondents reported knowing about these vehicles, compared to just 53 percent last year. Additionally, 51 percent stated they would consider purchasing a Chinese car, up from 41 percent. Among the Chinese brands, Huawei leads the pack, with 27 percent of respondents willing to consider it. Xiaomi follows closely at 23 percent, while BYD, known for its electric vehicles, ranks third at 19 percent. These brands are increasingly recognized for their advanced digital integration, which many believe surpasses that of American vehicles. Automotive journalist Kevin Williams noted that the digital interfaces in Chinese cars are notably user-friendly. He remarked on the intuitive nature of screens in these vehicles compared to those in the U.S., stating that they often provide seamless access to popular apps, including full-featured versions of services like Apple Music and TikTok. This level of digital sophistication is drawing interest from American consumers who are looking for innovative automotive technology.
