Meta’s AI spending spree is helping make its Quest headsets more expensive

Meta is set to raise the prices of its Quest VR headsets by $50 to $100, marking an increase of approximately 12 to 20 percent, effective April 19. The company attributes this price hike to a global surge in the costs of essential components, particularly memory chips, which are impacting a wide range of consumer electronics, including virtual reality devices. However, unlike many other tech firms facing similar challenges, Meta’s own investment strategies are contributing to the rising costs of these components. The company is heavily investing in the race for artificial intelligence advancements, which has intensified the demand for critical resources. In January, Meta announced plans to allocate between $115 billion and $135 billion for capital expenditures this year, a significant increase from the $72 billion projected for 2025 and just $28 billion in 2023. A significant portion of this funding is directed toward AI infrastructure, including a recent $21 billion investment in the data center company CoreWeave, topping up an earlier commitment of $14.2 billion, as well as a new $10 billion investment for a data center project in El Paso, which has seen its budget rise from an initial $1.5 billion. This aggressive spending on AI is part of a broader trend, with the industry as a whole expected to invest $630 billion in AI infrastructure by 2026, as reported by CNBC. Much of Meta's expenditure is focused on GPUs and data centers that require substantial amounts of RAM and storage, exacerbating the component supply issues that are now necessitating the price increase of the Quest headsets.
