Ring founder 'backs the blue,' says AI is helping Amazon-owned doorbell unit fight crime

Jamie Siminoff, the founder of Ring, has made a notable return to the video doorbell company after stepping down in 2023. Initially selling Ring to Amazon for $839 million in 2018, Siminoff reached out to Dave Limp, Amazon's former devices chief, to express his decision to leave the company. He felt that he couldn't be half-hearted about his commitment and chose to step away. However, his departure was brief. In April, Siminoff resumed leadership at Ring, replacing Liz Hamren, who had held the position for two years. With his return, Siminoff is refocusing on Ring's core mission: enhancing neighborhood safety. He highlighted the integration of advanced artificial intelligence technologies to bolster these initiatives. During a recent Amazon hardware event in New York, Siminoff unveiled new Ring cameras featuring a groundbreaking tool called Search Party. This AI-powered feature is designed to identify potential matches in video footage, initially aimed at reuniting lost pets with their owners, but with the potential for broader applications. Under Hamren's leadership, Ring shifted towards a lighter, more whimsical branding, showcasing humorous videos of pets and family moments. Notably, the company also discontinued a controversial tool that allowed police to request footage from users through its neighborhood watch app, a decision met with mixed reactions from privacy advocates. Siminoff, who resides in Los Angeles with his two dogs, a Belgian Malinois and a Chihuahua, expressed his commitment to maximizing camera coverage in neighborhoods using AI technology. He emphasized that Ring's capabilities extend beyond just addressing serious crimes. The company, part of Amazon's extensive devices division, oversees a range of products from Kindle e-readers to robotaxis. Ring's security cameras, starting at $50, offer subscription options that allow for continuous video recording and additional cloud storage. A recent violent incident left Siminoff shaken and reaffirmed his dedication to Ring's mission. After witnessing a shooting in South Central Los Angeles, he realized the importance of Ring’s role in supporting law enforcement when they lack the resources to canvass neighborhoods. Despite the potential benefits, the relationship between Ring and police has faced scrutiny. Amazon has previously claimed that a pilot program in Los Angeles found significant reductions in burglaries thanks to Ring cameras, but this assertion has been contested by various reports. Privacy advocates worry about the implications of the Neighbors app and the risk of fostering racial profiling. Siminoff, who identifies as pro-public safety, defended Ring's approach to police collaboration. He clarified that while the company allows police to request footage, it is done in a manner that prioritizes user privacy. Recently, Ring reinstated its community request feature through a partnership with Axon Enterprise, allowing users to decide whether to share their footage with law enforcement. Looking ahead, Siminoff indicated that Ring is profitable and considering new growth avenues, including security solutions for small and medium-sized businesses. While he has thought about leveraging Ring's technology within Amazon's operations, he ultimately decided against it, citing the distraction such a move could cause.
