Amazon’s Ring to partner with Flock, a network of AI cameras used by ICE, feds, and police

Ring, the well-known manufacturer of surveillance cameras owned by Amazon, has officially announced a collaboration with Flock, a company specializing in AI-driven surveillance technology that provides video footage to law enforcement agencies. This partnership enables law enforcement personnel utilizing Flock's cameras to request video clips from Ring doorbell users, aiding in their efforts for evidence collection and investigative processes. Flock's surveillance systems are designed to scan license plates and gather identifying details about vehicles, enhancing the capabilities of police and other governmental bodies. These customers can utilize natural language processing to sift through video footage, searching for individuals that match particular descriptions. However, the integration of AI technology in law enforcement has sparked significant concerns regarding the potential for increased racial bias. On the same day that Ring unveiled this partnership, a report by 404 Media disclosed that several agencies, including ICE, the Secret Service, and the Navy, have access to Flock's camera network. This collaboration could grant Flock access to footage from millions of additional cameras, raising further questions about privacy and security. Historically, Ring has faced scrutiny regarding the protection of user videos. In 2023, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) mandated that the company pay $5.8 million due to allegations that its employees and contractors had unrestricted access to customer footage over an extended period. This partnership with Flock may intensify these concerns as the use of surveillance technology continues to evolve.
