With its new app store, Ring bets on AI to go beyond home security

Ring, the Amazon-owned security camera company, is set to revolutionize its offerings with the introduction of a new app store designed to enhance the capabilities of its extensive network of over 100 million cameras. Announced earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show, this initiative aims to extend beyond traditional home security, targeting sectors like elder care, workforce management, and rental management. Developers of various sizes will have the opportunity to join Ring's ecosystem, allowing them to reach a broader audience. This move reflects a strategic shift for Ring, which is branching out from its core focus on smart doorbells and residential cameras to cater to commercial applications as well. The app store's capabilities are powered by advancements in artificial intelligence, enabling users to apply Ring’s real-time monitoring features in a variety of contexts. One notable partner, Density, has introduced an app called Routines, designed to assist families in monitoring their elderly relatives. This application leverages Ring’s cameras to provide alerts on potential issues such as falls or changes in daily routines. Meanwhile, QueueFlow offers businesses insights into customer wait times and crowd management, while Minut supports Airbnb hosts by monitoring noise levels and temperature via additional sensors. Ring's CEO, Jamie Siminoff, emphasized the transformative potential of AI in this venture, stating, "With AI, there’s just an incredible amount of long tail use cases. We are unlocking value that our customers have invested in, in things that…all of us together never thought we could do." Nevertheless, Ring is mindful of growing concerns regarding surveillance technology. The backlash following the introduction of features for tracking lost pets and wildfire detection highlighted public unease about privacy. In response, Ring has established guidelines that prohibit apps with invasive privacy features, including facial recognition and license plate scanning. Following a critical response from consumers, the company also ended its collaboration with Flock Safety, which involved sharing footage with law enforcement agencies. Ring has faced scrutiny for its historical data-sharing practices with police, prompting a reevaluation of its partnerships. The app store will be accessible within the Ring app on both iOS and Android devices, initially limited to U.S. customers before expanding internationally. Notably, the integration of partner apps will not rely on the app store's in-app purchasing systems, allowing Ring to avoid commissions owed to Apple or Google. Users will need to download partner apps separately to access these new features. Siminoff highlighted the opportunity for developers, noting that Ring's existing camera base provides a significant platform for potential customer engagement. Currently, around 15 apps are available, with many more expected to launch. The company is open to various business models, including subscription plans, one-time fees, and ad-supported options. With ambitious goals for expansion, Ring aims to host hundreds of apps across multiple sectors by year’s end, paving the way for a diverse and innovative app ecosystem tailored to enhance user experience and security.
