Ring is adding a new content verification feature to videos

In an effort to enhance video authenticity, Ring has unveiled a new feature called Ring Verify, designed to make it increasingly challenging to manipulate footage captured by its cameras. Announced on Thursday, this innovative tool allows users to determine if a video has been altered, a feature that could prove invaluable when receiving shared videos from neighbors or viewing clips that claim to depict specific events. The company likens the verification process to a tamper-evident seal found on medicine bottles. If any modifications are made to a video—whether it be a minor adjustment in brightness or a simple trim—the integrity of the verification will be compromised. Starting from December 2025, this feature will be automatically applied to all videos recorded with Ring devices. While a failed verification does not automatically imply that a video is fake, it does indicate that some form of alteration has occurred. This could range from adjustments made for clarity to the possibility that the footage was recorded prior to the verification feature's launch. In the event of a failed verification, users can request an unedited version of the video, which could be particularly useful for matters like insurance claims. The verification capability will be extended to all videos shared or downloaded from Ring’s cloud, irrespective of the device used. However, it’s important to note that videos recorded with end-to-end encryption will not support this verification feature and will always be marked as “not verified.” To utilize the verification service, users will need to visit Ring.com/verify, where they can submit their video link for immediate feedback. Despite this, TechCrunch reported that the verification site is yet to be operational, raising questions about the timing of the announcement. Clarifications from Ring are pending.
