Ricursive Intelligence, an innovative startup focused on creating AI systems for designing and enhancing AI chips, has successfully secured $300 million, elevating its valuation to an impressive $4 billion. This funding round, announced on Monday, was spearheaded by Lightspeed Venture Partners. The firm aims to revolutionize AI chip development by enabling its system to generate its own silicon substrate layer, thereby accelerating improvements in AI chips. The founders envision a cyclical process that could lead to artificial general intelligence (AGI). This Series A funding comes just two months post-launch, following an initial seed investment led by Sequoia, bringing the total funds raised to $335 million, as reported by the New York Times. Ricursive's leadership team includes CEO Anna Goldie and CTO Azalia Mirhoseini, both former Google researchers. They have pioneered a reinforcement learning technique known as AlphaChip, which has been instrumental in the design of four generations of Google’s TPU chip. In addition to Lightspeed, other notable investors include DST Global, NVIDIA’s venture capital branch NVentures, Felicis Ventures, 49 Palms Ventures, and Radical AI. It's important to distinguish Ricursive from another startup named Recursive, which was founded by renowned natural language processing expert Richard Socher and is also reportedly in discussions to secure significant funding at a $4 billion valuation, as per Bloomberg. Both companies are part of a growing trend of startups developing self-improving AI systems. Another player in this space, Naveen Rao’s Unconventional AI, raised $475 million in December, achieving a valuation of $4.5 billion with backing from Andreessen Horowitz and Lightspeed Ventures, among others.
