A study in contrasts: The cinematography ofWake Up Dead Man

Rian Johnson has once again captivated audiences with his latest film, 'Wake Up Dead Man,' featuring the beloved detective Benoit Blanc. This gripping tale revolves around the mysterious demise of a fiery parish priest, Monseigneur Jefferson Wicks, portrayed by Josh Brolin. Set against a hauntingly Gothic backdrop, the film embodies the essence of a classic locked-room mystery. To bring his creative vision to life, Johnson enlisted the expertise of cinematographer Steve Yedlin, a long-time collaborator known for his work on 'Looper' and 'The Last Jedi.' Their partnership, which dates back to their teenage years, allows them to work seamlessly together. "We don’t have to test each other," Yedlin explained in an interview. "We can dive right into the details of each scene without wasting time on figuring out our artistic preferences." In 'Wake Up Dead Man,' Yedlin skillfully emphasizes the contrast of light and shadow, enhancing the film's unique Gothic atmosphere. The script calls for dramatic shifts in lighting, often occurring within the same scene. A notable moment occurs when Wicks delivers a powerful sermon, where sunlight breaks through the clouds, momentarily illuminating him before being obscured once more. Yedlin also noted that the film features various times of day, from dawn to dusk, allowing for dynamic lighting effects that enhance the storytelling. As Wicks's sermon intensifies, sunlight bursts forth, flaring the lens in a breathtaking display. The production utilized custom light control software, enabling the team to manipulate lighting nuances in real-time, ensuring each shot is both creative and consistent. With this innovative approach to cinematography, Johnson and Yedlin aim to elevate the film's narrative, ensuring that every visual element contributes to the tension and intrigue of the unfolding mystery.
