F1 in Miami: That’s what it looks like when an upgrade works

Formula One roared back into action this past weekend in Miami after a surprising five-week hiatus. The race, set on a temporary circuit around the iconic Hard Rock Stadium, reflects the high-octane marketing drive of the Liberty Media era. With hospitality suites that offer tickets priced up to $95,000, the event strives to capture the glitz and glam of a modern Monaco, despite being situated far from the ocean. Initial plans to host the race over a bridge spanning Biscayne Bay were scrapped following community feedback. Recent modifications to the hybrid power units of the cars allowed for changes in energy regeneration and deployment, which significantly impact performance. While the season began with intense action, fans expressed concern over the cars being overly energy-restricted during qualifying, leading to what critics labeled "yo-yo" racing due to frequent position changes. Fortunately, the new regulations aimed at managing energy use seemed to stabilize the competition in Miami, reducing the risk of drastic speed variations that previously led to accidents like Oliver Bearman’s crash in Japan. The Miami circuit's design features ample braking zones that facilitate energy regeneration, allowing each car to recover up to 7 MJ per lap. Normally, upgrades might be avoided during this race weekend, as it is one of the six sprint events on the calendar. However, with only a single hour of practice on Friday morning, the organizers adjusted the schedule to provide an extended 90-minute practice session, acknowledging the need for teams to adapt to the new rules and upgrades introduced for this round.
