ChatGPT comes to Apple CarPlay: Step-by-step guide on how to use chatbot while driving

In an exciting development for drivers, Apple has incorporated OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its CarPlay system with the release of the iOS 26.4 update. This marks a significant milestone as it introduces the first major AI chatbot to Apple’s in-car interface, allowing users to engage with this advanced conversational AI directly from their dashboards. With this new feature, drivers can enjoy hands-free interaction with ChatGPT, turning their vehicles into hubs of entertainment and productivity. Whether you want to brainstorm ideas during your drive or enjoy some lighthearted AI-generated humor, accessing ChatGPT is now just a tap away. To begin using ChatGPT on Apple CarPlay, ensure your iPhone is updated to the latest iOS 26.4 version, and that you have the newest iteration of the ChatGPT app installed. It's important to remember that this functionality is exclusively available in vehicles equipped with Apple CarPlay. To connect, plug your iPhone into your car’s USB port or link it wirelessly. Once connected, locate the ChatGPT app on your CarPlay home screen and tap to open it. Initiate a conversation by selecting "New Voice Chat," and you’ll see it transition from "Connecting" to "Listening." Simply speak your queries or prompts naturally, and ChatGPT will respond through your car’s speakers. If you wish to continue a previous conversation, just select the recent chat and speak your prompt. For an even smoother experience, enable the Auto-Start Mode by navigating to Settings > Voice within the ChatGPT app on your iPhone. This feature allows ChatGPT to start automatically in CarPlay, so you can dive straight into conversation as soon as you open the app on your dashboard. This innovative feature is being rolled out globally to all users, including those on Free, Plus, Pro, and Team/Enterprise plans. For users in the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, and the UK, the rollout is expected to happen soon.
