With new agent mode for Excel and Word, Microsoft touts “vibe working”

In a significant update to Microsoft 365, the tech giant has unveiled innovative features designed to transform the way knowledge workers create complex documents. Users can now generate intricate Word documents and Excel spreadsheets simply by using text prompts directed at Microsoft's chatbot. The announcement included two distinct products, each leveraging different underlying models and accessible through separate tools. This has led to some confusion, given the similar naming conventions chosen by Microsoft. At the core of these advancements is the Agent Mode, powered by OpenAI's GPT-5 large language model. This feature, currently available in the web versions of Word and Excel, enables users to not only input prompts but also facilitates a multi-step planning process, complete with a validation loop aimed at ensuring high-quality outputs. Microsoft plans to extend this functionality to its native desktop applications in the future. In addition, Microsoft introduced the Office Agent for Copilot, which is built on Anthropic models. This feature integrates within Microsoft's Copilot AI assistant, enabling users to generate documents for Word or PowerPoint from prompts. While Office Agent does not encompass the multi-step process of Agent Mode, Microsoft asserts that it represents a significant leap forward from previous document-generation capabilities powered by OpenAI, which users had criticized for various limitations. Currently, Office Agent is available to participants in the Frontier Program for Microsoft 365 subscribers. Together, these features aim to empower knowledge workers to engage in what Microsoft is calling "vibe working," a term that plays off the established concept of vibe coding. Vibe coding involves developing applications through a conversational interface with a large language model, allowing for iterative improvements based on user feedback. With these enhancements, Microsoft is positioning itself at the forefront of a new way of working, promising to streamline the document creation process and enhance productivity for users across the board.
