AI agents could make the org chart obsolete. Microsoft's AI product lead explains what might replace it.

The structure of corporate management as we know it could be on the verge of a major transformation. According to Asha Sharma, Microsoft's AI platform product lead, the traditional organizational chart—characterized by a hierarchy of boxes and lines indicating reporting relationships—might soon become irrelevant. In a recent episode of "Lenny's Podcast," Sharma suggested that the rise of AI agents could lead to a more streamlined approach to management, focusing on tasks rather than rigid hierarchies. Sharma emphasized that with AI agents integrated into various workflows, the way companies operate could shift dramatically. "The org chart starts to become the work chart," she explained, highlighting a future where identifying the right mix of human and AI involvement is prioritized over traditional reporting structures. Instead of asking who reports to whom, businesses might focus on efficiently routing tasks to the appropriate personnel. As the corporate environment adapts, Sharma indicated that the questions companies will need to address will also evolve. Organizations will have to determine how best to route tasks, who is suited to undertake them, and how to monitor and adjust AI performance. Furthermore, she proposed that employees may eventually bring their own 'agent stacks' to work, similar to the trend of personal devices in the office, providing access to new skills and capabilities. This shift could also redefine meetings, which Sharma predicts will change significantly, potentially leading to more effective yet unconventional gatherings. Meanwhile, the trend of reducing management layers is already underway in major tech firms. Microsoft recently cut around 6,000 jobs, partly to enhance managerial efficiency, a move echoed by other giants like Amazon and Google. The implications of AI in the workplace are profound, especially for middle management. Retool CEO David Hsu noted that many of his clients are already contemplating how AI could replace traditional roles. Some organizations are trialing AI agents to perform tasks typically handled by managers, such as analyzing meeting notes and delivering feedback to employees, raising questions about the future of job roles in an AI-driven landscape.
