WordPress.com now lets AI agents write and publish posts, and more

WordPress.com is taking a bold step into the future of web development by integrating AI agents that can draft, edit, and publish content on user websites. This innovative move, announced on Friday, promises to transform the way online content is created and managed. Users will now have the ability to control AI agents through simple natural language commands, enabling these tools to handle everything from managing comments to updating metadata. This shift could significantly ease the process of establishing and maintaining a website, potentially leading to a landscape where much of the online content is generated by AI rather than humans. With WordPress powering over 43% of all websites globally, even its hosted service represents a substantial portion of internet traffic, attracting 20 billion pageviews and 409 million unique visitors each month. The new AI capabilities follow the introduction of Model Context Protocol (MCP) support last fall, which allows applications to provide context for large language models. This enhancement enables AI assistants to connect seamlessly with WordPress.com, offering users insights into their site’s content, settings, and analytics through various AI applications like Claude Desktop and VS Code. Now, AI agents can do more than just read content; they can create posts, landing pages, and even About pages, while also making structural adjustments. Initially, these agents will be able to manage comments, restructure categories, and optimize alt text and titles to improve SEO. All activities performed by the AI will be logged in the site’s Activity Log for transparency. Users can draft posts for AI agents to publish, complete with tags and meta descriptions. Alternatively, they can describe what they want the AI to create, with all changes requiring user approval. By default, AI-generated posts will be saved as drafts, allowing for human oversight before publication. This integration aims to speed up website creation while maintaining a level of human control over content. The AI agent is also designed to analyze the site’s existing theme and layout to ensure consistency in design elements. To activate these new features, WordPress.com users can visit wordpress.com/mcp, select their desired capabilities, and link their preferred AI client. While the rise of AI-generated content raises questions about the future of online writing, it also offers a unique opportunity for human readers to engage with the evolving capabilities of AI. Similar experiments are emerging elsewhere, such as Meta's acquisition of Moltbook, where AI agents interact within a social network, showcasing the growing trend of AI involvement in content creation.
