Now, get AI-enabled weather forecast from IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has unveiled an innovative Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered forecasting system aimed at enhancing monsoon predictions across the nation. This initiative responds to the growing need for localized and high-resolution weather forecasts, particularly from the agricultural sector and other industries. This groundbreaking system is the result of a collaborative effort involving the IMD, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune, and the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF). It represents a significant evolution from traditional weather forecasting methods, focusing on impact-based and decision-support forecasting that delivers precise, location-specific information. Farmers, disaster managers, and local authorities will benefit from this advanced forecasting capability, which provides actionable insights tailored to their needs. The AI-enabled system will issue probabilistic forecasts regarding monsoon advancements every Wednesday, extending up to four weeks in advance. Designed to assist agricultural stakeholders across 16 states and over 3,000 sub-districts, this innovative product will leverage the dissemination framework of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare. By integrating AI forecasting models with extended range prediction systems and statistical methodologies, it aims to offer forecasts that are not only operationally useful but also crucial for effective agricultural planning and readiness.
