Replit's CEO thinks AI will end soul-crushing corporate work — and bring entrepreneurship inside big companies

Amjad Masad, the founder and CEO of Replit, has a bold vision for the future of work. He argues that the current corporate landscape is flawed and believes that artificial intelligence (AI) can be the key to transforming it. According to Masad, traditional work environments often alienate employees, confining them to rigid roles where creativity and ideas can easily stagnate. During a recent appearance on the 'Possible' podcast with Reid Hoffman, Masad expressed his concerns about the atomization of the workforce. "People become sort of cogs in the machine," he lamented. "And I don't think that is conducive to the human spirit." He believes that AI has the potential to change this narrative by empowering employees within large organizations to develop, test, and implement their own ideas without waiting for engineering approvals. Masad envisions a future where AI agents automate mundane, repetitive tasks that currently consume much of the workforce's time—such as documentation and workflow management. This would allow employees to engage in more entrepreneurial and creative pursuits. "As the boring things, the automated things actually are taken care of by machines, we're left to be more entrepreneurial and more creative," he stated. He is not alone in this belief. Other leaders in the tech industry, such as OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman and Microsoft’s AI product lead Asha Sharma, have noted that AI agents can perform tasks typically assigned to junior staff. McKinsey's CEO Bob Sternfels has revealed that the consulting firm is already integrating 25,000 AI agents into its workforce. Masad shared an inspiring example during the podcast: an employee at a prominent real estate marketplace had an innovative idea for improving how buyers were connected with agents but struggled to secure engineering resources. In the past, such an idea might have stalled. However, utilizing Replit's AI-driven coding platform, the employee successfully created a routing algorithm that significantly boosted business revenue. "He built a new routing algorithm that drove tens of millions of dollars, if not hundreds of millions of dollars, to the business," Masad explained. The outcome was transformative—not only did the company benefit financially, but the employee also earned multiple promotions and now plays a pivotal role in shaping the company's AI strategy at the board level. Masad views these developments as a new form of entrepreneurship within large organizations, where domain experts can convert their insights into actionable results. He believes that this shift not only enhances productivity but also restores meaning to work by reconnecting individuals with the impact of their contributions. "Humans are fundamentally creative," he asserted, emphasizing that if AI can alleviate tedious tasks without undermining human judgment, corporate jobs could become significantly more fulfilling and less burdensome.
