AI is slowly transforming the cold chain, the supply chain that handles your ice cream and deli meat

The cold chain is undergoing a transformation as advanced technologies, especially artificial intelligence, begin to reshape how refrigerated and frozen goods are managed. At Lineage Logistics, a leading player in this sector, the arrival of shipments triggers a series of automated processes. Using computer vision, machines scan pallets and collect vital data on customers, product types, and item details. AI algorithms analyze both shipment data and historical trends to forecast when goods will be dispatched from warehouses. This technology not only designates storage locations for pallets but also guides forklift operators, optimizing workflows. The efficiency gains from this system are essential in cold warehouse environments, where even minor temperature fluctuations can jeopardize the integrity of products like frozen foods and pharmaceuticals. For years, temperature monitoring and refrigeration technologies have been staples of cold chain operations, but the integration of cutting-edge AI tools is ushering in a new era. Cold-chain providers are moving away from manual methods, opting instead for automated solutions powered by AI and exploring concepts like digital twins to enhance operational efficiency. Sudarsan Thattai, Chief Information Officer at Lineage Logistics, emphasizes the pervasiveness of technology in the cold chain, stating that whether it’s traditional systems or innovative AI, both play crucial roles. For instance, when poultry shipments from Tyson Foods arrive, AI-driven algorithms determine optimal placement within the warehouse to minimize unnecessary movement, thereby conserving energy and time. According to Rob Chambers, President of Americold, there is a notable enthusiasm for technological innovation across all sectors of the cold chain. Pharmaceuticals and specialty food items often lead the charge in adopting new technologies, driven by stringent regulations and the need for precise temperature control. While customers may not directly request AI, they do seek outcomes that such technology can provide, like reduced stockouts and improved responsiveness to real-time changes. Unilever, known for its ice cream brands, also leverages AI to optimize its extensive cold chain operations across 60 countries. By analyzing weather data, their AI systems can predict regional ice cream demand, allowing for strategic stock allocation ahead of potential heat waves. This approach has reportedly enhanced forecasting accuracy by 10% in Sweden and boosted US sales by 12%. Despite these advancements, challenges remain, particularly in data visibility and sharing across the cold chain. Thattai acknowledges that while progress has been made, many companies still operate in silos, limiting the effectiveness of AI. Without comprehensive data sharing, the potential of AI is not yet fully realized. As the cold chain continues to evolve with the integration of AI, the industry is poised for significant improvements in efficiency, accuracy, and responsiveness, ultimately benefiting both providers and consumers alike.
