How Staqu’s ‘Jarvis’ is securing RCB’s home ground for crowd control

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) gears up for 2026, ensuring the safety of enthusiastic fans has become a pressing priority. The tragic stampede outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium last year, which resulted in 11 fatalities and numerous injuries, underscored the urgent need for enhanced crowd control measures. In response, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) are implementing significant security upgrades. To bolster these efforts, RCB has teamed up with Staqu Technologies, an innovative AI startup specializing in video analytics. The partnership aims to enhance the stadium's existing network of over 500 CCTV cameras by integrating the advanced “JARVIS” system. This cutting-edge technology is designed to monitor crowd dynamics intelligently, detect irregular behaviors, and issue real-time alerts to prevent overcrowding. Atul Rai, the Founder and CEO of Staqu Technologies, elaborated on JARVIS's functionality during an interview, explaining how it will operate within the stadium during IPL matches. The system will continuously observe approximately 30,000 attendees, analyzing crowd movement, queue lengths, and access to restricted areas. Rai emphasized that JARVIS proactively tracks crowd density, issuing alerts before critical limits are reached, thereby transitioning crowd management from a reactive approach to a predictive one. One of the key innovations of JARVIS is its ability to differentiate between celebratory events and potential emergencies. Rai detailed how the system utilizes density estimation combined with activity recognition to identify crowd anomalies, such as whether individuals are running or stationary. He noted, "While a marathon might visually resemble a stampede, the context of density and crowd behavior provides crucial insights." The system flags potential emergencies only when a sudden increase in density correlates with running activity. Moreover, the JARVIS system integrates advanced visual recognition capabilities, including optical character recognition (OCR) for license plates and facial recognition for monitoring flagged individuals. This comprehensive approach enables authorities to efficiently oversee various security threats from a centralized platform. In addition to its stadium applications, Staqu's technology is already in use by multiple state police departments, enhancing their ability to track crowds and monitor for suspicious activities. Rai pointed out that JARVIS not only aids in crowd management but also streamlines law enforcement tasks. By automating the previously manual review of CCTV footage, the system significantly expedites investigations, allowing for rapid identification of suspects. Furthermore, JARVIS enhances surveillance within correctional facilities, helping track disturbances and unauthorized access. As Staqu continues to innovate, the introduction of Jarvis GPT in early 2025 aims to make surveillance data even more user-friendly, allowing security personnel to extract information using natural language queries. This advancement exemplifies how AI-driven systems can transform crowd management, potentially saving lives during large-scale events.
