Satellite operators will soon join airlines in using Starlink in-flight Wi-Fi

In a groundbreaking development, satellite operators are set to follow in the footsteps of airlines by utilizing SpaceX's Starlink for in-flight internet connectivity. This advancement comes on the heels of SpaceX's historic Polaris Dawn mission, which saw private astronauts engage in the first fully commercial spacewalk. During this mission, Jared Isaacman and Sarah Gillis made history as they ventured outside the Crew Dragon spacecraft, outfitted in SpaceX-designed pressure suits to withstand the harsh conditions of space. Notably, Polaris Dawn was the first mission to leverage the Starlink broadband network, establishing a laser-based communication link between the spacecraft and Starlink satellites. Traditionally, satellite communications have relied on intermittent connections with ground stations, limiting their ability to maintain constant contact. The International Space Station (ISS) benefits from a dedicated network of NASA data relay satellites that offer nearly continuous communication, but these systems are costly and primarily serve governmental missions. In contrast, Starlink is designed for widespread connectivity, catering to millions of users globally, whether they're at home, traveling, or even airborne. Now, a California startup named Muon Space is poised to pioneer the integration of Starlink technology into commercial satellites. Announced recently, Muon plans to equip its satellites with Starlink terminals, becoming the first commercial user of this innovative connectivity solution beyond SpaceX. Founded four years ago by industry veterans, Muon Space aims to transform satellite manufacturing and operations by merging hardware, software, and operational expertise. As launch costs decline, their mission focuses on building efficient constellations of low-Earth orbit satellites tailored to client needs, marking a significant shift in how satellite communication will evolve in the near future.
