These little robots are changing the way solar farms are built, saving time and money

The renewable energy sector continues to advance, even in the face of reduced government support, thanks to innovative technologies enhancing construction efficiency. Solar farms, which typically demand extensive planning, surveying, and labor, are now seeing a significant transformation with the introduction of robotic solutions. One notable advancement is the CivDot, a four-wheeled robot developed by Civ Robotics in California. This remarkable machine is capable of marking up to 3,000 layout points daily with an impressive accuracy of within 8 millimeters. It can traverse challenging terrains and withstand adverse weather conditions, streamlining the construction process substantially. Tom Yeshurun, CEO of Civ Robotics, explained the technology's foundation lies in its advanced navigation and geospatial capabilities. "Our secret sauce is the ability to mark coordinates with precision on uneven outdoor surfaces, which is particularly challenging in rugged landscapes," he stated. The process is straightforward: data from manual surveys is uploaded into the Civ software, allowing operators to select the area for marking with just a press of a button, enabling the robot to take over and significantly reduce time and costs. Yeshurun highlighted the financial efficiency of using CivDot compared to traditional surveying methods. He noted that the costs associated with manual surveying equipment and labor can quickly add up, making the robot a cost-effective alternative. Civ Robotics currently has over 100 robots deployed, primarily serving renewable energy companies, but also extending their utility to the oil and gas sectors. Civ Robotics is collaborating with Bechtel Corporation on multiple solar projects. Kelley Brown, Bechtel's vice president, emphasized the robot's efficiency, stating, "Previously, our highly paid field engineers could manage about 250 to 350 pile marks a day. With CivDot, we now achieve around 1,250 marks daily." She also acknowledged the robot's capabilities in challenging environments, from muddy terrain in Texas to the arid landscapes of Nevada, with considerations for tire performance and battery management being crucial. Civ Robotics has attracted significant venture capital support, amounting to $12.5 million, with backing from prominent firms such as Alleycorp and Trimble Ventures. While other robotics solutions exist for marking tasks, Yeshurun pointed out that competitors primarily focus on roads and sports fields, lacking the adaptability needed for the diverse terrains of the solar industry. This innovative approach is poised to redefine how solar farms are constructed, paving the way for a more efficient and cost-effective future in renewable energy development.
