Mivo’s new app takes a mindful approach to managing screen time

In an era where endless scrolling through social media has become a common concern, a new app named Mivo Scrolling is taking a refreshing approach to the issue of screen time management. Launched last month, Mivo aims to help users become more mindful rather than imposing strict restrictions on their usage. While Mivo may appear similar to other screen time applications by tracking usage patterns and providing insights into daily habits, its unique selling point lies in its no-shaming philosophy. The app encourages users to intentionally reflect on their online time, aligning with the growing slowtech movement that emphasizes a healthier relationship with technology. Instead of blocking access to certain apps, Mivo allows users to establish customizable time limits for specific platforms. For example, individuals can set two dedicated scrolling sessions a day, each lasting an hour, during which they can prioritize the apps they wish to engage with. When it's time for a break, a gentle reminder prompts users to consider their motivations for scrolling: Is it out of boredom, seeking distraction, or genuinely unwinding? Creator Pranshu Raithatha shared insights with TechCrunch, stating, "Most screen time tools try to restrict people after the habit is already happening. Mivo adds a small reflection moment right when someone opens a social app, so they can pause and ask why they’re opening it before falling into an automatic scroll." Additionally, Mivo encourages users to take regular breaks every two, three, or five minutes, fostering intermittent check-ins that promote awareness of their scrolling behaviors. After each session, the app queries users about the quality of their time spent, aiming to foster a more conscious relationship with their devices. For added convenience, Mivo features a widget that can be placed on the home screen, displaying daily scrolling statistics and reminding users of their next scheduled session. Currently, Mivo Scrolling is available for free on the App Store, inviting users to take control of their screen time in a more thoughtful way.
