From strangers to lovers: How this startup is simulating the 'meet-cute' with AI

In an era where digital interactions often overshadow genuine human encounters, a new startup is leveraging artificial intelligence to revive the charm of spontaneous meetings. This innovative company, known as 222, aims to recreate the magic of the 'meet-cute' — those serendipitous moments that lead to friendships or romantic relationships. CEO Keyan Kazemian explained that 222 seeks to simulate the experience of walking into a lively venue and naturally connecting with others. By employing advanced machine learning algorithms, the platform matches users based on a comprehensive personality assessment, setting them up for social events like dinners or outings with potential friends or partners. Launched initially in 2021 as a dinner series in Los Angeles, 222 has since evolved into a full-fledged company after gaining acceptance into Y Combinator and relocating to New York City. With the introduction of its mobile app in 2024, the startup has expanded its mission beyond casual meetings, focusing on fostering deeper connections. After users engage in their first 222 experience, the platform follows up to gauge interest in future encounters, be it a casual hangout or a romantic date. If both parties express mutual interest, 222 organizes the next date, making the process effortless for its users. Kazemian noted that the organic nature of in-person introductions can lead to more meaningful connections. A recent survey revealed that 77% of Gen Z individuals met their partners in real life, underscoring the ongoing appeal of traditional social interactions. In contrast, many dating apps may strip away the excitement of navigating new relationships. 222's methodology is rooted in user feedback, allowing its AI to refine matchmaking based on real experiences. The team emphasizes the importance of 'labeled data' to enhance future pairings, encouraging subscribers to participate in multiple events to improve their chances of finding compatible matches. As competition in the AI-driven matchmaking space heats up, with various startups and established dating platforms exploring similar concepts, 222 is committed to expanding its offerings. The startup recently secured an additional $10.1 million in funding, bringing its total to $13.7 million. With plans to further develop tools that facilitate ongoing relationships, 222 is positioning itself as a pioneer in both creating and nurturing connections among users. Kazemian concluded that the goal is to help users find their next offline moment together, whether it's a date or a casual meetup, ensuring that the magic of human connection is never lost.
