For years, Valve has been incrementally enhancing the Proton compatibility layer, enabling a vast array of Windows games to run smoothly on SteamOS, which is based on Linux. However, this compatibility usually only stretches back to titles created for Direct3D 8, a proprietary graphics API launched by Microsoft in the early 2000s. Now, a groundbreaking open-source initiative aims to push Linux compatibility even further into the realm of classic PC gaming. The d7vk project is designed as a Vulkan-based translation layer for Direct3D 7 (D3D7), facilitating the operation of 3D applications on Linux through Wine. This isn’t the first time developers have tried to enable Direct3D 7 games on Linux. For over two decades, Wine's built-in WineD3D compatibility layer has provided some level of support for D3D7 games. However, the d7vk project distinguishes itself by utilizing the existing dxvk compatibility layer, which is already employed by Valve’s Proton for SteamOS and is reported to deliver superior performance compared to WineD3D for a number of games. The author of the d7vk project, known as WinterSnowfall, notes that while they do not foresee this new project being integrated into the main dxvk in the future, it will offer the same level of configuration profiles and targeted fixes that users expect from dxvk. Although d7vk may not universally outperform existing solutions, WinterSnowfall believes that providing more options is beneficial for the gaming community.
