On February 25, Perplexity introduced its groundbreaking AI system, dubbed the 'Perplexity Computer.' This innovative platform is designed to serve as a versatile digital worker, capable of planning and executing intricate projects over extended timeframes. As the competition in the AI sector heats up, the focus is shifting beyond traditional chatbots to more autonomous solutions. According to CEO Aravind Srinivas, the company has been diligently developing this product behind the scenes for several months. With AI models growing more advanced yet increasingly challenging to deploy independently, Srinivas shared in a post on X, "What has Perplexity been up to the last two months? We've silently been working on the next big thing: Perplexity Computer." He elaborated that the system integrates all existing AI capabilities into a cohesive unit. The Perplexity Computer is engineered to research, design, code, deploy, and manage projects by breaking down overarching goals into manageable tasks that multiple specialized AI models can tackle concurrently. "Computer is a general-purpose digital worker that operates the same interfaces you do," the company explained in a blog post. This system is capable of creating and executing entire workflows, functioning continuously for hours or even months. This launch signifies a key industry transition from conversational AI to more 'agentic' systems that can autonomously perform tasks rather than simply respond to queries. Users initiate the process by outlining a desired outcome, after which the Perplexity Computer dissects the project into subtasks handled by "sub-agents" that might conduct online research, generate documents, process data, or utilize external services. The company emphasized that the coordination of these tasks occurs automatically, allowing users to divert their attention to other matters or run numerous Perplexity Computers simultaneously. Unlike traditional systems based on a singular AI model, Perplexity Computer distributes tasks among various specialized models based on their suitability for each job. Perplexity argues that as AI models gain in complexity, this multi-model orchestration is essential for maximizing efficiency. "As models become more powerful, a versatile AI must harness the most capable one," the company stated. Each advanced model specializes in different types of tasks, necessitating a full workflow that can leverage all available resources. Srinivas explained that the system treats these models as interchangeable tools rather than standalone products. "It’s multi-model by design," he noted, equating the models to essential tools like a file system or command-line interface. Currently, the Perplexity Computer operates with 19 different models, each dedicated to specific functions such as reasoning, coding, research, and more. The AI is designed to execute tasks in isolated environments, equipped with access to a real browser, file system, and external integrations, allowing it to interact with software in a manner akin to a human worker. Perplexity Computer will initially be available to subscribers of its Max tier, featuring usage-based pricing that includes monthly credits and optional spending caps. Srinivas envisions the Perplexity Computer as the next evolution of personal computers by 2026—customized, secure, and capable of recalling previous work. He framed this advancement as a significant shift in AI's role, stating, "The computer is one of the best inventions known to mankind. When AIs can orchestrate a file system with CLI tools and a browser, AI essentially becomes the Computer, running tasks in the cloud while you rest." The company plans to extend this offering to Pro and enterprise users following thorough testing.
