ChatGPT can now shop for you, schedule meetings, and analyze presentations

OpenAI has taken a significant step forward with the launch of the ChatGPT agent, a new AI tool designed to streamline user interactions and automate various tasks. This general-purpose agent enhances the existing capabilities of the ChatGPT chatbot, enabling it to perform a variety of actions on behalf of users. With the ChatGPT agent, users can now have their calendars managed, online shopping conducted, and even spreadsheets created—all through simple conversational commands. The agent can efficiently gather information from the web, automate repetitive tasks like transforming screenshots into presentations, and assist in planning events or updating data. OpenAI has integrated features from both its Operator and Agent tools, allowing for a seamless transition from conversation to task execution without losing context. This functionality is further enhanced by the addition of advanced browsing capabilities, described as a “visual browser” that uses a graphical interface, along with other tools for various types of web queries. Moreover, the ChatGPT agent can connect to platforms like Gmail and GitHub, making it easier for users to obtain relevant information for specific prompts. Users maintain control by logging into different websites as needed, allowing the agent to operate effectively within their digital environments. Flexibility is a key feature of the ChatGPT agent; users can interrupt and adjust its activities at any point to guide it toward desired outcomes. It can also request further information from users to ensure tasks are completed accurately. According to OpenAI, the ChatGPT agent has outperformed previous models in various benchmarks, including those assessing reasoning and spreadsheet editing capabilities. However, the company acknowledges that the agent's risk profile remains higher than earlier versions. CEO Sam Altman cautioned that there is potential for misuse, as the agent could inadvertently expose users' private information if manipulated. Currently, the ChatGPT agent is accessible to OpenAI's paying members, including those subscribed to Pro, Plus, and Team plans, via the 'agent mode' feature in the ChatGPT app or website.
